Peter Steele, the giant bass-playing vocalist for Type O Negative, will never be accused of being a happy-go-lucky ghoul, I mean guy. Life Is Killing Me, the new release from Type O Negative, has all the elements of a Type O record with a return to the (enjoyably sophomoric) sense of humor that was missing from 1999’s World Coming Down, a bleak record even for Type O Negative’s standards. Don’t get me wrong -- the cynicism, anger, crossed by love(r) themes and death fixations are still there; it’s just that the famous Type O dark sense of humor returns with the anti PC anthem of Peter’s response to same-sex advances, “I Like Goils,” and the cover of “The Angry Inch” from the Broadway play and film, Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Type O Negative records are comprised of Black Sabbath riffs, gothic haunting keyboard arrangements, a dash of punk, a bit of the Beatles and a whole lot of sonic soundscape provided by Kenny Hickey’s guitar work and the driving bass of Peter Steele. Throw in Steele’s absolutely unique vocal delivery and you have the recipe for one of the best bands in metal today. “(We Were) Electrocute” is an example of the more pop side of the band musically mixed with the typical themes of jilted love. I have always felt that their sound was fresh and unique because it was a combination of elements you wouldn’t think of putting together. It works, and with Steele’s wit back in the fold, it really is a very good listen.
