This album is a really good little blues record, period. I don’t know how to say it any other way. The musicianship is exquisite as Landreth directs his band in and out of all kinds of shades of the blues structure. The record is smooth to the ear, much like a shot of whiskey is kind to the throat on a cold Chicago winter’s night. From the mellow opener, “True Blue,” Landreth seduces with a sweet acoustic number as just one flavor of the many to come. My favorite track on the album, “All About You,” is the heaviest song on the disc. The rhythm section hammers wonderfully behind his virtuoso playing. Landreth’s voice is serviceable, but make no mistake, the star of this album is Sonny’s guitar playing. I enjoyed The Road We’re On and can’t wait for the next trip. ~R.
