Animosity by Sevendust is a great metal album and one of the better ones from the new wave of rock bands that are mixing elements of hip hop with the metal sound. Harder bands like Soundgarden, King's X and Queensryche have always stood out in the past because they attacked their music with intelligence, excellent musicianship and featured vocalists who could not only scream, but could flat out sing. James Hetfield of Metallica's best vocal performance to date can be found on the track "The Unforgiven" from 1991's
Metallica in which super producer Bob Rock (Motley Crue, The Cult, Veruca Salt) got him to actually sing the song and not deliver it with his signature snarl. Sevendust's vocalist Lajon Witherspoon lays down some great vocals that mix enough guttural screams with his rich, soulful voice.
Aaron Lewis from Staind adds some harmony vocals to "Follow" but the rest of the record is all Sevendust (except for one musician who contributes keyboards and strings to two tracks). Metalheads shouldn't be disappointed. The boys deliver enough thump to bang your head, but provide enough variety so that the record doesn't blend into one freakin' song. I really dig it and will probably need some neck support by the time I take it out of heavy rotation on my stereo.
