Warning: If you're looking for a repeat of 1986's So, this record isn't it. If, however, you're looking for a moody record full of atmosphere and the perfect soundtrack to a rainy day, this is it. Up, as Peter Gabriel's latest album is ironically called, is a record of undeniable craft, cleverly constructed of 10 tracks that create a melancholy but excellent listening experience. This record is more influenced by Gabriel's soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ than the pop elements of So. Little pieces of his past work do creep in but the soundscape on this album is distinct.

Each song is a journey, with changing rhythms and subtle adjustments in mood and tempo within each track. The overall construction of the album has a more progressive feel in that nine of the 10 tracks are more than six minutes long (including five that are more than seven minutes long). The production and mix are perfect for a record like this, with the bass and percussion standing out as the driving instrumentations that compliment Gabriel's incredibly textured, smooth voice.

Lyrically, the album can be summed up by some of the titles that include "peppy" little numbers like "Darkness," "No Way Out," "I Grieve" and "The Drop." Gabriel even offers his take on the growing obsession with 15 minutes of fame on "The Barry Williams Show." This is an excellent record if you are looking for something a bit different and not expecting the pop of songs like "Sledgehammer," "Big Time" or "Steam." This is not that kind of work, but well worth the listen.
