When this album was first released in 1965 it made a huge splash on the music
scene. The provocative whipped cream clad muse on the album cover inspired
millions to take a listen to Herb Alpert’s Mariachi come Dixie-Land sound.
The food-themed album features some of Alpert’s biggest hits. Alpert’s keen ear
for the catchy made him a legend among his broad fan base. “A Taste of Honey,”
the big Alpert hit, heads a repertoire of tasty tunes such as a sultry rendition
of “Tangerine” and an up-beat "Lemon Tree." The Dating Game theme song, “Whipped
Cream,” creates a pang of nostalgia and adds a kitschy flavor to a mélange of
musical styles that comprise this album.
The Polka delight, “Peanuts,” and “Love Potion #9” are Alpert favorites that
make this album a classic. Two additional tracks have been added, “Rosemary” and
the mellow “Blueberry Park.”
This album is a great find for all of the die-hard Alpert fans who will enjoy a
walk down memory lane that conjures images of mid-sixties fun and frolic, but
new listeners may find this album hard to categorize as anything more than a
collection of advertising jingles and game show theme songs.
