John Lennon: Rock 'n' Roll (2004)

Originally released in 1975, John Lennon’s Rock 'n' Roll was his tribute to his teenage idols, including Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Ben E. King and Buddy Holly. The album has now been remastered and remixed under the supervision of Yoko Ono and includes four bonus tracks.

The best track on the album is Lennon’s cover of “Stand by Me,” which rivals the quality of the original. Lennon is clearly enjoying himself as he rocks his way through some of his favorite songs. The album shows Lennon’s love of early rock music, and there are no departures into Lennon’s activism or political views. That, of course, was the whole point behind the album.

Lennon fans that have to gets their hands on all his material will be pleased, and fans of the early Beatles sound will probably enjoy the disc. Fans of ‘50s-style rock should also consider this CD. For those of us who admired Lennon for his bold lyrics and willingness to push the envelope musically, this CD won’t be at the top of our list. It’s still, however, another reminder of the extraordinary talent that music fans miss so much.
