Anyone familiar with the Smooth Jazz radio format knows it has become a hybrid of jazz, R&B and, well, soft rock. Aside from specialty college and non-commercial shows, the avid jazz fan might find it hard to get a fix on their local Smooth Jazz affiliate. Marc Antoine’s debut, Mediterraneo, on Dave Koz’ Rendezvous Entertainment label sounds like it was tailored just for that Smooth Jazz format. Recorded on location with his band in Madrid, this classically trained guitarist combines influences from his studies, from performing Afro-pop in Paris nightclubs, and from playing with the London based Reggae Philharmonic orchestra. The result is an ear candy marriage of jazz, world music and flamenco guitar.

“Cubanova,” “Funky Picante,” and the title track are the first three songs, and they are all upbeat and melodic with Antoine’s precision guitar picking. “Castellana Hood” and “Gotham” are the kind of songs to seduce your girlfriend with. I could even imagine Sade singing melody lines over these tracks. “Gringo” is more of a groove piece, more R&B or Steely Dan-esque in nature. The final track, “Alejandro’s Lullaby,” was written for Antoine’s son and is a really pretty finale to this fine collection.

Okay, I’m a guitar player so my appreciation for any type of guitar work runs deep. If you’re not a player (no, not THAT kind of player!) I could see you getting bored with this one at times, if only because that can be the nature of instrumental music. On the other hand, I think most guys need more stuff like Marc Antoine in their CD collections. It is well-written, well-produced smooth jazz that relaxes both mind and body. And if you’re lucky, it does the same for your lady.
