"1970 Monte Carlo" kicks the record off with twangy guitars and a country flavor, but "Hard Times" and the title track are more Springsteen-esque and, frankly, are incredible songs. "Burn Down" was written about lead singer/ songwriter Mark Stuart's divorce and is the best track of all -- the galloping acoustic guitar, whining pedal steel and Stuart's heartfelt vocals create a gut-wrenching feeling of empathy. Actor friend and singer Billy Bob Thornton helped out on the cover "Long Black Veil." "Wind it Up" and "Damage is Done" are shit-kicking rockers while "Last Goodbye" and "Beautiful Cage" close the album off on a melancholy note. This is one of those records that you blast in your car and drive down the road feeling like you're in a movie -- it's got that soundtrack of life quality about it. They're just great songs that are powerfully delivered. As Thornton himself said, the Bastards' music is "spooky, traditional, ethereal and earthy all at the same time." You know, I couldn't have said it any better. ~Mike Farley mfarley@bullz-eye.com
