After listening to Econoline Crush's third release, Brand New History, I'm amazed that
these guys haven't gotten more radio play. Mixing a heavy dose of electronica with a definitive metal sound, this quartet of talented musicians, led by singer/songwriter Trevor Hurst, has delivered an album that samples from nearly every level of the musical spectrum.
Brand New History opens with an aggressive rocker called "Make It Right," a fantastic song that features some blistering guitar work while Hurst's commanding voice rips through his potent lyrics. Track two, "Flamethrower," has a dance-club feel thanks to its driving beat and distinct electronica sound, prompting comparisons to Nine Inch Nails and Stabbing Westward. "May I Go," however, slides down the pop scale a bit and will probably remind you more of Sugar Ray and maybe even 311, while the album's finale, "Tomorrow Starts Today," will leave an INXS taste in your mouth.
All in all, Econoline seems to have taken influences from several different bands, throwing a little bit of Filter into the mix and even stirring in a pinch of Godsmack for good measure. This disc will leave metal fans out of breath but with their variety, Econoline Crush will force music fans of nearly every genre to keep
Brand New History in their CD player. And while you're at it, pick up Econoline's first two albums,
The Devil You Know and Affliction.
