Infiniti has been on the cutting edge of design over the last decade, and the new 2012 Infiniti G37 Sedan 6MT is another winner in the stable. The smooth as silk design in many ways masks the powerful and daring soul of this sedan.

Exterior

Our vibrant red test model looked very sporty with 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels that really made a statement when you first view the G37. Some of the exterior highlights include advanced second-generation Front Mid-ship (FM) platform, long, wave-like aluminum hood, pushed-back A-pillars and aggressive stance, double-arch grille with sculpted grille blades, High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon headlights, fog lights and L-shaped LED taillights, chrome trunk finisher, unique front fascia, grille and side sills, sliding glass moon roof with tilt and one-touch open/close feature, heated outside mirror and zero lift front aerodynamics. The dual chrome exhaust finishers pumps up the athletic stance along with its sleek wave-form hood, signature G-style taillights and raked A-pillars.

Interior

There is no mistaking the interior of the G37 Sedan 6MT for anything but an Infiniti, and that’s a good thing. The overall cabin is designed around the driver with an emphasis on luxury and comfort. The graphite appointed leather seating was as rich and comfortable as any car in this class, and better than many more expensive rivals. A loaded interior was at hand with “Shodo” finish aluminum-alloy trim on center console, instrument panel and doors, Standard 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat and 8-way power adjustable front passenger’s seat, hand-stitched leather-wrapped steering wheel with steering wheel mounted audio and cruise control switches, tilt and telescopic steering column, electroluminescent instrumentation with white-themed illumination, and Standard Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition.

Also included was an Infiniti Studio on Wheels by Bose Premium Audio System, with a 3-way front door speaker array using 10-inch subwoofers and a parcel shelf-mounted subwoofer, audio system featuring in-dash CD changer with Radio Data System (RDS), auxiliary audio input, MP3 playback capability and 6 speakers, Standard 7-inch color monitor display, Infiniti Navigation System with XM NavTraffic with Real-Time Traffic Information and NavWeather with Real-Time Weather and 3-day forecast, Streaming Audio via Bluetooth and Zagat Survey Restaurant Guide, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, RearView Monitor, XM Satellite Radio, USB port for music playback devices, analog clock, digital automatic temperature control with standard micro filtration and rear heater vents, available dual HVAC control with available rear A/C vents, sport-styled steering wheel with special stitching color, aluminum pedals, sport-styled front seats with thigh extensions and driver’s power torso and thigh bolsters. Together, these options turned the cabin of the 2012 Infiniti G37 Sedan 6MT into one of the smartest interiors on the market. Trunk space was plentiful and rear seating was right on the mark with plenty of leg and elbow space for rear passengers.

Performance

A six-speed manual transmission in a luxury sports sedan is always fun, and when you add the expertise of the engineers at Infiniti, we were very much looking forward to driving the G37 6MT. The six-speed manual gearbox is about as smooth as you’ll find out there, and the powerful 328 horsepower 3.7 liter DOHC 24 valve,VVEL V6 engine was extraordinary. Adding to the superb performance was the 4-wheel independent multi-link suspension (front single pivot double-wishbone design) with extensive use of lightweight aluminum components and front and rear stabilizer bars, power-assisted vehicle-speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering, 4-wheel power-assisted vented disc brakes, 4-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and available Brake Assist (BA), Sport Brakes with 14-inch rotors with 4-piston front calipers and 13.8-inch rotors with 2-piston rear calipers with “Infiniti” lettering,  split 5-spoke 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with P225/50R18 front and 245/45R18 rear W-rated performance summer tires, Standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), vicious limited slip differential (VLSD), and 4-piston front and 2-piston rear calipers. The G37 is well balanced and corners were a breeze handling above expectations. Fuel economy was solid coming in at 17 mpg city and 25 mpg in highway driving.

Overview

The design of the 2012 Infiniti G37 Sedan 6MT has somewhat of a calming effect when you first see the car as it’s just so silky smooth from all angles. The interior is very upscale with fit and finish combined with high-end materials adding to the overall ambiance. For those who relish driving a manual transmission but still want a luxury sedan, the 2012 Infiniti G37 Sedan 6MT just might be the car for you. There is plenty of enjoyment here for a sticker price of $41,495, and that might explain the affection for car buyers for this classic offering from Infiniti.
