About charities benefiting from license plate purchases

In recent years, license plates have evolved from being boring, two color plates into a myriad of colors and designs. Now, every state in the United States offers its residents the ability to choose a “cause” or charity to donate to. Drivers can purchase private number plates that benefit everything from Child Abuse Prevention programs (AZ) to Firefighters (FL). Utah has the highly successful “No More Homeless Pets,” with proceeds going to Best Friend's Animal Society, the largest animal rescue sanctuary in the United States.
When a driver purchases a license plate to support a charity, it's an excellent way to identify himself with the cause he personally supports and believes in. The license plate design not only has the charity in mind, but also a slogan. The states themselves, also, sometimes, match the donations raised from the license plate purchase. For instance, the Child Abuse Prevention program in Arizona, matches 50 cents for every dollar contributed through the private number plates program. Since its launch in 2000, more than $4.1 Million has been raised.
Other charities that benefit from state's private number plate programs are as varied as the states themselves. Missouri, for example, has the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation which supports fish, wildlife and forestry programs. Florida has recently even approved religious plates with proceeds being donated to religious organizations. Pennsylvania charity license plates include PA State Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and Purdue University. Most states also support colleges and universities with special license plates – and, as with the other specialty plates, fees for the plates are donated to the schools.
So if you have a special charity that you want to support, and you want to tell the world that you support them, consider purchasing one of the many specialized license plates that your state offers.
