All right already! Stop whining and get over it!
by: Mike Barkacs
Pg 1 of 1

It's starting to seem like our whole nation is populated by four year olds. People from every quarter are constantly whining about everything imaginable--no matter how large or small, or whether it's of their own making or not. Besides becoming tiresome, this childish display is damaging to America, and its interests and perception worldwide.

Who's to blame? Could it be the nouveau riche who are proving, just as they did in the 20's, that money doesn't buy class? Is it the lawyers (as usual) and our litigious society that refuses to allow any slight to go unpunished? Is it you? Truth is we're all to blame, but it's got to stop.

Right now the whole country is involved in a collective moan about gas prices. It doesn't matter that the rest of the world has been paying considerably more for fuel for generations; Americans expect cheap gas to be a birthright. It also seems irrelevant that for the last few years they've all thumbed their noses at the oil producers and have bought huge gas guzzling monstrosities--primarily used to drive to the office and boost self-esteem. Like it or not, these high gas prices are self-inflicted, so shut-up and fork it over or ride the bus.

On a related subject, road rage is, after-all, nothing more than dangerously aggressive whining about the incompetence of other drivers. Feeling safe and invincible wrapped in two tons of metal, even the meekest take offense at every fool that dares impede their journey. Until the children racing around the interstates realize they aren't the center of the universe, and start showing a little civility and courtesy to the others (however pathetic they may be), our roads aren't going to be getting any safer.

Obviously, whining is rampant in politics. For Clinton's whole second term, all we've heard is aghast Republicans crying about the President having sex in office (and lying about it), and the Democrats whimpering about being persecuted--if not prosecuted. This should be well beneath the dignity of a great nation, but it's about the only thing this nation has done for four years, and that's just the obvious example. Stop it, both of you, and get back to running the country!

The whole political correctness scourge has been brought on by the incessant whining of over-sensitive do-gooders. It's accomplished nothing. Like speaking a foreign language, we may now translate our thoughts (or edit them entirely) into acceptable speech, but the thoughts haven't disappeared with the words. John Rocker should be derided for being a pathetic hick, but he also should be applauded for speaking his mind. The real problems will never be addressed while we keep them hidden behind a p.c. blanket.

Then we have the New York City police. After pumping 41 shots into an unarmed and innocent man, they had the nerve to whine about a song Bruce Springsteen has written about the incident. American Skin is hardly a scathing diatribe on the police, so move on. In the meantime, try to quit killing innocents and concentrate on protecting us from those who do.

All the races grumble about the other races; the sexes are constantly griping about each other. None of these feelings are going to change anytime soon--and they don't have to. We can continue hating the fact that we are forced to share this planet with so many idiots, but let's grow up a bit and try to recapture some dignity. Besides being silly, petty and disgraceful in the eyes of the world--all this moaning is really starting to get on my nerves!
