Formula 1 wrap-up (Australia)
by: Matt Saha
Pg 1 of 1

Well Michael Schumacher did it again. First place from wire to wire for the world's highest-paid athlete. The race, however, was unfortunately marred by a brutal accident involving Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher. The Villeneuve camp is claiming that Ralf braked at an awkward moment, causing Villeneuve to hit Ralf's car and go airborne. Jacques' car broke apart upon flight. It's amazing that Villeneuve was not seriously hurt. The same, I'm sad to say, cannot be said for a road crew worker who was killed by accident debris and the 13 spectators who were also injured.

Mika Hakkinen challenged Shumacher for most of the race, but his car fell apart on lap 26 and he was forced out of the race in another accident that gave him a slight concussion. Australia has never been Mika's course, although McLaren team boss Ron Dennis is convinced that Mika was poised to overtake Schumacher at the next pit stop if his car hadn't failed. This is the third year in a row that Mika has not finished here, and a few years back he almost died on this course in an accident that left him in a coma. David Couthard, Mika's teammate, pulled an aggressive and gutsy move on Rubens Barrichello to take second, but he didn't have quite enough gas to get near Schumacher's car.

The youngster, Kim Raikkonen, whom a lot of people felt shouldn't even have been in the race, was impressive in his debut, scoring points for Sauber in his sixth place finish. The poor kid had trouble even getting on to the track as security guards could not believe that the baby faced kid was indeed a racer. On to Malaysia in two weeks.
