David Harbour and Archie Madekwe in "Gran Turismo"

Blu Tuesday is a weekly column where we review the newest Blu-ray and 4K releases, along with a brief rundown of the included bonus material, to determine whether they’re worth buying, renting or skipping.

Pick of the Week: “Gran Turismo”

Based on the incredible true story of Jann Mardenborough’s rise from video game sim racer to professional race car driver, “Gran Turismo” is a formulaic but surprisingly good underdog sports film that perhaps didn’t get the attention it deserved upon its initial release. Though the product placement can feel a bit cringey at times, and the first act is rough around the edges, “Gran Turismo” eventually finds its groove to deliver an entertaining crowd-pleaser that takes some necessary dramatic license with Mardenbourough’s real-life story. David Harbour and relative newcomer Archie Madekwe are both great in their respective roles, while the racing scenes are every bit as intense and thrilling as you’d expect for a movie associated with the iconic video game series. “Gran Turismo” is by no means high art, but it does what it sets out to do really well, exceeding expectations in the process.

Extras include a behind-the-scenes look at making the film, some deleted scenes and more. FINAL VERDICT: RENT
